Online affiliate marketing is more than 30 years old now, and while there have been some major players (Amazon, for example) that have had a ton of success with it for many years, it has only been for the past year or two that it was really considered a mainstream marketing option. Today large publishers including eBay, Reuters, CNET, MSN, Reuters, and many others are using Affiliate marketing to generate increased revenue and supplement the banner ads that are quickly becoming ineffective.

Now that affiliate marketing is a mainstream option, what does that mean for the average blogger or marketer that runs a modest blog or website? To put it simply, it is a very good thing indeed.

While having major companies does present some new challenges, the fact that there is so much more attention given to affiliate marketing today than ever before is creating tons of new opportunities. Lots of companies are creating new affiliate programs because of the obvious potential for generating new sales without the uncertainty of traditional marketing campaigns.

For the ‘little guy’ affiliate marketer, the trick is to make sure you’re keeping up with the latest trends, and being aware of new opportunities as they present themselves. Of course, it is also important to use high quality content (video, audio, written, ect) to bring in potential customers.  Finding ways to differentiate yourself from the big companies that are getting into the affiliate marketing world shouldn’t be difficult, and when done properly, it can be extremely effective.
