Rich Schefren’s Facebook Campaign Goes Bad

A lot of the internet marketing “gurus” use social media, especially Facebook and Twitter to promote their programs. At least a dozen times a day I get advertisements from these guys, claiming of course that they know the secret to internet marketing, making money online and so on. Let’s ignore whether or not these guys are legit, but instead focus on perhaps one of the biggest failures I’ve seen so far in marketing one of these products.

Below is a Facebook promoted post that caught my eye from a guy named Rich Schefren. I have no idea who he is, perhaps he’s a marketing genius of sorts and his programs work. His promoted post caught me eye because of the video with Brian Tracy, which not only looked as if it was from a 1980’s info commercial, but that Brian Tracy had been brought back from the dead specifically to do this commercial. Somehow during the entire video he managed not to blink once, and I swear not a single facial muscle moved either. I assumed even before watching this, they were pitching an alternative to botox that would make me a millionaire.

I wasn’t the only person who noticed this. In fact, there were dozens of comments about Mr. Tracy’s interesting look which provided more than ample humor for many of the other commentators.

However, there were many other comments that weren’t so funny criticizing the course, and the promoter. They called Mr. Schefren a fraud, a crooked and linked to ripoffreport.com. It wasn’t one random comment, but dozens.. some that were years old. Yes, these negative comments had been up for years.

Not only has his hurt his own reputation in his ads by not monitoring what was being said, but his promoted post because a forum for people to attack other products that I assume he would be promoting.

There is no excuse for someone who is an expert in marketing to not monitor what is being said in their own promotional forum. The first thing to be taught in any marketing course whether its in college or online is to pay attention to your own message. Can you imagine walking into a car dealership and having a sticker on the car you are interested in that says “Don’t buy this car, it’s a piece of crap?” This is even more important in social media, where one bad mistake like this can end up hurting your entire campaign.

    LOL, awesome call out Pace.

    These gurus make me laugh. The same can be said with the “Andy + Mike” pair who are touting their “formula for creating viral videos” which is such an oxymoron.

    Proof? Just check out this FACT: these two who claim to have the “formula” to create viral videos have created a total of ZERO video that actually went viral.

    Make you think, doesn’t it?

    I watch your website from time to time, and appreciate the industry news and some of the articles. But I’ve got to tell you, in my opinion you missed the mark on this one.

    Rich Schefren is one of the true marketing greats – up with Jay Abraham, Dan Kennedy, John Carlton, and all the old greats. Don’t let the fact that he trained Mike Filsaime stop you from getting to know who he is. His stuff is truly top-notch – an order of magnitude above most.

    I *completely* agree with your point about people being aware of the environment they are in – and advertising in.

    However, this isn’t a great example.

    Schefren has been around so long and has so many clients that of course he’s going to have some bad press. (I’m guessing he’s okay with that as he counts his millions of very legitimately-earned dollars.)

    He’s got killer products with amazing guarantees – so the only thing I can imagine people bitching about (and there’s very little in your images above about Rich specifically) are the idiots that buy a product, let it sit on their computer and expect pennies to fall from the sky. And then ask for their money back a year later.

    Who the hell is “Ibeleme” anyway? What does he know about whether Rich taught those guys? (He did…and many more household marketing names.)

    I’d trust my own due diligence about whether Rich is legit any day of the week over some random trolls that sit and whine about things they don’t know.

    Oh, and the video? Yeah, not the best. But I’ll listen to Brian Tracy based on his reputation…despite what he looks like.

    Not an affiliate of or related to either of those guys, but there are so many true crooks and idiots out there that somebody has to help put in a word for the true good guys.
