SEO for YouTube Equals Traffic

YouTube is more than a video sharing website, it’s also the second most popular search engine in the world. That’s right – millions of people regularly use the YouTube’s search engine to find videos of their choice.
What does this mean to you as an online marketer? It’s pretty simple, if you can optimize your videos to rank well on YouTube you will not only get views to your videos, but visitors that are actually interested in what you’re offering.
A lot of people on YouTube are searching for information in the form of videos. They’re looking for how-to stuff that will help them solve their problems. When you’re using YouTube for your online marketing needs, creating such informative videos and having them ranked well can be a huge plus.
So the question that comes up here is – how do you exactly go about optimizing your YouTube videos? The following article discusses a few simple to apply, workable tips to help you do just that:
Tip #1: Don’t Ignore the Keywords
Regardless of what your video is about, getting it ranked requires you to first take care of the basics. And since people use keywords to search for videos on YouTube, you can’t ignore them.
Your primary keyword needs to go in the title, the description and as well as in the tags. Don’t put this main keyword in the last – put it first before your website’s name.
The YouTube search algorithm is constantly evolving and it takes various factors into consideration. And one such factor is the click-through rate of your video.
This is why you need to write compelling titles for your videos and weave in your keywords naturally in them. Just the way you’d apply copywriting rules when writing blog posts or sales letters, the same goes with your videos.
Tip #2: Build Your YouTube Channel
One of the things that influences your video’s ranking on YouTube is the age of your channel. If your channel is brand new with a few videos and a couple of subscribers, you will have a hard time competing with the big, established guys.
So it makes sense to not waste time when it comes to building your YouTube channel. Start showcasing yourself as an authority.
Go out there and do everything you can to make your channel popular within your niche. Give your audience a reason to subscribe and interact on your channel.
Tip #3: Respond to Comments
YouTube is a social site where people come to not only watch videos, but also interact with other users, discuss, debate, etc. YouTube wants you to encourage comments and one way to do that is to respond to the incoming comments in the first few hours after you hit the publish button for your video.
This is crucial because building comments and growing them early on helps boost the video’s position in search. A very simple step that can help you grow your video rankings over time – so don’t ignore it.

Youtube is indeed a very useful traffic source. In addition to what you already mentioned: It’s also possible to place a (nofollow) link in the youtube video description. These links seem to be picked up very fast by Google.

Of course one other useful advice would be to try and get your channel known by way of creating a viral video. Of course this is not easy but that’s why so many companies are investing money in video products only feebly related to their market niche – the important thing is getting attention. I’m especially thinking of the recent Volvo video with the rope-walking stunt, that’s a great example of using YouTube (and the curiosity for extreme sports, to a lesser extent) for raising brand awareness.

I can personally attest to this. We have a handful of YouTube channels in different niches, that have produced us leads and sales for years. With no optimization.

Hi all,
Before uploading any videos, make sure you have your keyword research completed and use those keywords to name the video ex: MiamiPrinters.mp4.
While no viewer ever sees the video’s name – Google and YouTube are looking for relevant content and the video now has some additional distinction to aide in your YT SEO efforts.
Thanks for the tips…man, I learn a 100 new things every day. With the definition of an ‘expert’ as someone who knows more and more about less & less, I’m never going to get to be ‘one’…its entirely too dynamic (and early) in the history of the Internet..

I always have the url of whatever I am mentioning/promoting as the first item in my description.
Like this eight (8) second video of my daughter talking about a book that I promoted.
And, yes, I am even credited & named in it, too.

Youtube is one of my favorite sites to get traffic from. We are also utilizing Youtube to collect leads and build a subscriber database, it’s slower than using paid traffic but if you want to build your list faster you can also use promoted videos which works very well. Google renamed this to Google Adwords for Video. When it comes to SEO I don’t spend as much time on off-page seo anymore I prefer to create a killer entertaining or informative video publish it to Youtube because the Youtube algorithm is solid, clear and understandable (in my opinion) as opposed to a lot of the constant changes being made on Google search all the time. One video I create can last for years as opposed to killing myself fucking around with SEO for days and months only gaining short term results because you have to constantly feed the beast (google). Don’t get me wrong I love me some SEO but at the moment I usually stick with doing good on-page seo and then spread my articles via social and leave it be.
I agree, SEO can be a drag if you don’t understand that google is all about “relevance.” Generally, I like to post and informative “how-to” videos and link back to the videos with keyword anchor text. Of course it would be better if you could create “viral videos on demand,” but I’ve not seen anyone invent a product like that… that really works… yet.
In some of my youtube videos, I use keywords in the video description, and in the video tags.
One thing with youtube is that people love watching videos and videos will always be viewed. One video might lead a potential customer to your youtube channel, and they might choose to view other videos that you have. So in essence, one video view leads to another.
